Seven years ago yesterday I earned the title "Mom" in my Average Ironmom title when Jason was
born. Two years ago yesterday I was selected by drawing to represent the Big Island at the Ironman World Championship, where I would later earn the "AverageIron" in my title by completing the race in 15:24. And yesterday, I realized exactly why I do the things I do in life.
I like to GO BIG. I give 100% in all that I do. I like to inspire. I want things to always work out the way they are supposed to, so that hopefully we can continue to enjoy this life without regret. To live with full expression of our selves, whatever that might look like, for as long as possible. Because people are inherently good. And interesting. Everyone is different in a beautiful and marvelous way and we have so much to learn and celebrate with each other, it is incredible. That is why it is especially sharp when a wonderfully fun, funny, hard working and good friend or neighbor is taken from us too soon.
Yesterday I learned that one of our former members at Trunk Trainers passed away earlier this month on what happened to be my mother's birthday, April 4th. She was a member of Trunk Trainers for two years on our Active and Fit program and always was ready with a smile and conversation. She battled breast cancer in 2015 with chemo, a single mastectomy, and daily radiation, and as a result was cancer free for a year and a half. Unfortunately, the cancer returned last January 2018, this time with a vengeance. Every workout she would come in with a smile. Every conversation had a positive tone. It is not fair that such a beautiful person is now gone from this earth with so much love and joy left to offer. Reading the email from her husband yesterday, which revealed even more of what a fabulous person she was beyond the gym, makes me sad deep in my soul. This is the exact reason I have committed my life to teaching healthy lifestyle habits to families and try to make whatever difference I can.
I want to teach preventative habits to delay disease as long as possible. I want to help people make their bodies feel stronger after being deconditioned or damaged from uncontrollable circumstances. I've learned the skills to do that. I want to empower moms to live a life for themselves, which includes taking care of their families, instead of forfeiting years and the self-sacrifice it seems to take because there is no other way. I want to show people the importance of self-care before it's too late. I wish I could help find a way to cure cancer. Until that happens, we can only do the things that seem to create a healthy body.
Sometimes we are dealt a had that is not fair. With the perfect diet, regular exercise, not smoking or drinking, keeping stress under control and having a loving supportive community, good people are still diagnosed with illnesses and diseases that can strip freedom from the most healthy individual. What I know for sure, is that the chances of premature death from diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer and more can be reduced by following a healthy lifestyle, even if only a little. Bodies are pretty resilient, healing with a change of behavior within days, weeks, months and years. Blatant abuse of the body does not mean you will end up having to deal with these issues. But there are many ways to prevent them and the hardship you and your family might have to go through. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in my opinion. But is is SO hard to stick to a healthy lifestyle!
The motives behind my Be Elefit Healthy Lifestyle Program is selfish. I want to figure out a way to take care of myself as best I can so that I can be around for my boys, my husband, and everyone else in the world that I love, and who love and appreciate me back. My mom has already been through breast cancer, my paternal grandmother passed away from a recurrence of cancer, and there is a myriad of family history of diabetes, Alzheimer's, stroke, heart disease and more in my family tree. Through all of my research in health and nutrition, the recurring theme that continues to develop can be broken down to 4 things, the 4 Pillars of our Be Elefit Lifestyle:
1. Eat healthy food, preferably whole foods with lots of plants
2. Exercise regularly, at least 30 minutes per day-more is better, with something you enjoy
3. Rest until you are recovered, minimize and manage stress
4. Put family first and nurture meaningful relationships.
I don't put avoiding excessive alcohol, smoking or drugs on here because that is obvious. Those things are not good for you. Taking care of mental health, wearing sunscreen (or not), household chemical use, ect. and hundreds of other factors are also very important. But if I focus on just these 4 things, I think I will be 10 steps ahead. It's enough to get on the right track. By teaching these 4 habits to as many families as I can, I MIGHT be able to make a difference in how many families have to deal with heart disease, diabetes, cancer. I MIGHT be able to stave off any future ailment that can develop in an overwork, nutrient starved, inflamed body that manifests ailments seemingly spontaneously. If it happens, you play with the hand you are dealt. But if what I have researched is true, and we can prevent some of these things, why not? I like to go big. I want to be 100 living well and spreading wisdom and inspiration to generations to come. I want to pull the potential out of the girls and boys, women and men who just need the encouragement and the spark to get started. I want to see amazing things, and share those things with my boys and husband, brothers and parents. I love life, and I want to see as much of it as possible. That is my WHY. Why I will continue to build my business to teach about health and wellness. Why I will mentor my employees and clients in how to balance the stressors in life with healthy behaviors. Why I am building a team, to help inspire world fitness, one family at a time. I might not have all of the answers. In fact, I know I don't. But I am going to keep doing my best and enjoying this ride.
